Digital Formats

IRCA in conjunction with specialists from the Remote Indigenous Archiving Plan Reference Group is currently developing recommendations for digital format standards for:

  • Moving images
  • Still images
  • Audio

The standards will be released for all media types in early 2015. Draft recommendations have however been made for Moving images and are provided below to support organisations moving ahead on digitising VHS tapes.

The Moving image digital standards for digital preservation masters are proposed as:

Digitised video (assumes SD video)

  • Codec: MPEG2
  • Video Bit rate: 25 Mbits per second
  • Frame rate: iFrame (25Hz)
  • Chroma: 4:2:2
  • Interlacing: Progressive
  • Audio type: PCM
  • Audio sample rate: 48kH
  • Wrapper: Quicktime (.mov)

Born digital video

  •  Codec: MPEG2
  • Video Bit rate: 50 Mbits per second
  • Frame rate: iFrame (25Hz)
  • Chroma: 4:2:2
  • Interlacing: Progressive
  • Audio type: PCM
  • Audio sample rate: 48kH
  • Wrapper: Quicktime (.mov)

Access copy digital formats are proposed as being those appropriate to the viewing or distribution platforms for the digital video.
